Surfing, swimming and walking along the beach are popular, but avoid swimming in or near the estuary to the south, where there are dangerous currents.

Lifeguards are on duty here from 15th May to the 26th September as well as on neighbouring beaches. (2021)

Dogs are allowed all year round on the central stretch of the beach, but there are restrictions at the southern end near the estuary and towards Gwithian to the north.

Upton Towans Beach

Upton Towans beach is situated near Hayle in West Cornwall. The beach reaches a low rocky headland and the lighthouse on an island just off the coast. Ideal for surfing and safe for bathing and backed by sand dunes and adjacent holiday camping sites.

Godrevy Lighthouse

RSPB Hayle Estuary

The Hayle Estuary is an estuary in west Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is one of the few natural harbours on the north coast of southwest England and during the prehistoric and early medieval periods was important for trade and the movement of people and ideas. The estuary of the River Hayle consists of the main channel, with several other nearby tidal areas, including Lelant Saltings, Copperhouse Creek and Carnsew Pool. It is included in the Hayle Estuary and Carrack Gladden Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds manages a nature reserve at the site.

Hayle Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre has three rooms and an outdoor area which are dedicated to displays about all aspects of Hayle’s past: Harvey’s Foundry; The Cornish Copper Company; Shopping; Shipbuilding; Hayle Carnival; Decorative Art and many more.

We also run a variety of workshops, temporary exhibitions, guided tours and community events.
