Upton Towans Beach

Home » Out & About » Upton Towans Beach

Walking through a picket gate from Atlantic Coast Holiday Park, Upton Towans beach can be reached directly over the undulating dunes, where the view across St Ives Bay opens out, the closer you get to the sands. On the other side of the bay the town of St Ives looks fascinating with its’ little coloured houses perched on the hillside and its’ beautiful beaches below. The estuary divides the edge of St Ives from the boundary of Hayle but all along the coast here, there are stunning shorelines to explore.

Three Mile Beach

The Towans themselves, span the full length of the three mile beach reaching from Hayle to Godrevy Lighthouse. They provide the second largest dune system in Cornwall and are a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) because of the huge wealth of bio diversity contained within them. The dunes offer the perfect conditions for toads, adders, lizards, orchids, moths and butterflies to thrive and are a prime habitat for skylarks, kestrels, stonechats and meadow pipits. Some rare species have their home in the Towans, such as the Silver Studded Blue Butterfly and the Pyramidal Orchids.

Watersports

Upton Towans provides the middle section of the 3 mile beach and walking from here is a wonderful way to spend time as there are breathtaking views in either direction. On the huge expanse of sand itself, the conditions are perfect for kitesurfing, the sea is good for safe bathing and the waves are
ideal for surfers of all abilities. There are lifeguards present 13/05 - 24/09 and dogs can enjoy this stretch of the beach year round.

There are also cafes and public conveniences nearby, as well as a large car park, making Upton Towans the perfect spot for a day at the seaside. But the great thing about Atlantic Coast Holiday Park, is that it is walking distance to all of these treasures, and the walk itself can provide a wonderfully peaceful and stunningly beautiful start and end to your beach trip.
